Waterfront Playhouse New Plays in May Mallory Square

Each year, across the nation, one event brings together entire communities to take part in the fight against cancer. That event is the American Cancer Society Relay For Life®. It’s a time and place where people come to celebrate those who have survived cancer, remember those we’ve lost, and fight back against a disease that touches too many lives.

To celebrate Sloppy Joe's 71st year at the corner of Duval and Greene streets in Key West, FL swing band Southernmost Brass will perform 8:00pm to 10:00pm. Prior to show, Theo and Ganine from Theo & Ganine's Dance Center located in Marathon, FL will instruct swing dance lessons 7:00pm-8:00pm. Everyone is invited to join in lessons.Theo and Ganine have been recognized as Top Teachers in America for the last four years. Ganine has performed in Broadway Shows and as a Radio City Rockette, and Theo owned the original Fred Astaire Dance Studio on Broadway.

Eve Ensler has put vaginas on the map. To be more accurate, she has put them all over the globe, from Sarajevo to Johannesburg, from Antarctica to Manila, and many places in between—over 800 productions have been staged in over 30 countries. The brilliance of the show is part stand-up routine, part consciousness-raising session, part political rally, part market research survey, part revival meeting, part group therapy, and part theatre. Key West native Lina Robles will return from the University of Florida to present a Mother’s Day tribute in the Grand Foyer of Tennessee Williams Theatre. Robles is a seasoned performer whose sumptuous voice and charming presentation will be the perfect gift for the well-deserving ‘mom.’
Celebrating short attention span theatre, The Red Barn is proud to present a collection of short plays with an exciting mixture of playwrights, directors and actors. Included in the evening will be Libations written by Michael Marrero, the winner of this summer’s successful collaboration between The Red Barn Theatre and The Studios of Key West, One Night Stand – an original short play competition. This theatrical venture will make for a very memorable, high-energy evening—Key West style.

In 1999 Fred Salinero and founding board memebers established the Cuban American Heritage Festival and the Cuban American Heritage Foundation to preserve Key West's rich Cuban History, artifacts and memorabilia. They wished to instill pride in younger generations to their Hispanic roots and explain to the public how Cuban heritage influenced Key West's culture and economy.
Each six member team must build a boat seaworthy enough to stay afloat for the entire race course in the Key West Bight in front of Schooner Wharf. The catch---the boats are made of plywood, fasteners, duct tape, and 2' x 4's.
