Sylvia
By A. R. Gurney
Directed by Joy Hawkins
8 PM

Dramatic literature is stuffed with memorable love scenes, but none is as delicious and dizzy as the one that begins this smash hit comedy. When middle-aged Gregg returns to his Upper West Side apartment accompanied by Sylvia, a frisky blonde he has just picked up in the park, he turns his life upside down. The trouble is the frisky blonde is an irresistible dog who is about to chew a hole in his 22-year old marriage. This show is a hilarious commentary on mid-life and the role pets play in our lives. Reprising her tour de force performance in one of the Barn’s most beloved tales is Marjorie Paul-Shook as the adorable pooch, along with Richard Grusin and Mimi McDonald from the original cast.

Vagina Monologues
By Eve Ensler
Directed by Carole MacCartee

Eve Ensler has put vaginas on the map. To be more accurate, she has put them all over the globe, from Sarajevo to Johannesburg, from Antarctica to Manila, and many places in between—over 800 productions have been staged in over 30 countries. The brilliance of the show is part stand-up routine, part consciousness-raising session, part political rally, part market research survey, part revival meeting, part group therapy, and part theatre. The Red Barn enjoyed a huge success with this show and is bringing it back to Key West. You won’t want to miss this roller coaster ride. Spread the word.

Return of The Key West Picture Show

The 1977/78 mock promotional film, The Key West Picture Show, captured a fleeting part of island culture at a time when things were giving way, all was in flux, old characters were passing on, and strange developments were springing up. Producer BJ Martin and his film-making crew took vibrant 16mm color reversal film and gave us something for posterity: 45 minutes of what their old Key West felt like, looked like, and sounded like. Their 30-year old film has become a legacy, and continues to inspire us to reflect on all things cultural: and isn’t that what good art does?

The challenge inspired by Martin’s film, put forth by The Studios of Key West and its various creative partners, is to rekindle the ethic of the original Key West Picture Show. Over the coming weeks and months, we’re inviting Key West film and video artists to train their modern camcorders on present-day Key West. Without any strict guidelines, we want to encourage the production of new short videos, mock travel films, interviews, music videos, and moving images that might distill the essence of this unique island.

Original Films will Premiere at The Tropic Cinema on Tuesday 15 April. Time TBA
